And here's a quick synopsis of what made it so happy:

• I finally grew some ovaries and started subbing for real. I worked a few days this week, and signed up for four days next week. It's not the best job ever, but it makes me worry a lot less about us having enough money.

• My Saturday morning ceramics class I teach went really well, the kids made really awesome little clay creatures and were way into it, too, which doesn't happen sometimes with that project.

• I didn't really need any coffee this morning! This was very happy, because usually if I don't get my fix I'm ready to fall over. Though I did end up drinking some, because that shit's gooooood.

• My mother-in-law sent me a giftcard to get some maternity clothes. Right now I'm living in the one pair of maternity pants that fit me (my sister lent them to me, and a pair of jeans, but the jeans are so fuckign fally-downy that they make me want to rip them off my body whenever I wear them), sweatpants, and a pair of leggings. Yaaay pants that fit - I can now re-enter society!

• I went to JoAnn's fabric to find material to make Christmas ornaments as a thank-you gift for my mother-in-law, and I found some wicked awesome fabric on sale, and a sweet pattern (the pink dress on the left) to use it in.

• We made the world's tastiest soup! I've been wanting to make minestrone forever, and I based my recipe on this one at Simply Recipes (if you don't know the site, it's the best food/recipe blog evar. For reals.), but took out the potatoes and added kale, frozen peas, some rosemary instead. We ate it over some leftover brown rice from a few days ago, and holy crap, it's good! It makes a shit-ton, so we'll have leftovers for like weeks, aaaaand the Mister made these insanely tasty croutons to go with it - made from homemade white bread, natch (Yes, this is what happens when you live with a grad student and you work part-time yourself - crazy good food).

• I've been feeling the little Future Baby/Cletus the Fetus wiggle around like crazy pretty much every time I'm sitting or lying down. SO sweet! It is the nicest part of being pregnant, hands down.

On a semi-related note, here's a picture I took for a friend (one of the few who actually reads this piece of crap), because she lives far away and wanted to see my new tummy. There was a woman at the farmer's market today who told me my tummy is so cute that she almost abandoned her stall to come pat it. And that my legs are still "so skinny, which just isn't right" - I said thanks, though I think that was the first time I've been insulted and complimented at the same time. People are crazy when you have a pregnant tummy. But I digress...

• Anyhoo, I have to go watch Russian Dolls with the Mister - nothing like crappy, fluffy foreign movie to end a really good day...stay tuned, because Christmas ornaments are only the beginning of the holiday crafting insanity I'm planning!

Oh yeah, bee-atches!

This is what happens when you abuse pee-n-see tests and your husband.

Aaah, so we finally came clean with the friends this week and told them all I'm pregnant with Cletus the Fetus (aka Fetus Face, but that's a little off-color, isn't it? Though, if our child is anything like us, I think it will find the nickname amusing someday). The future baby is due mid-February, and I'm just saying no to the medical field of obstetrics (aka institutionalized misogyny) and going with a midwife. Luckily, we have really good health insurance (thanks grad student union!) and the University has an actual School of Midwifery. We got to hear the heartbeat at an appointment earlier this week, it was really awesome, though it made me giggle, which made the microphone freak out.
So yeah, six more months of hanging out with someone growing in my tummy, and then the rigors of parenthood get to hit us like a ton of bricks. And considering they were made with fabric scraps, cardstock left over from my wedding and magazine pages, they don't look too homemade or anything...now I just have to paint picture frames and finish the prints I made for all of the brides and grooms.

Last cute shit thing...I have all these japanese lanterns that we never used for the wedding, and I had this vision of a bunch of them over the dining room table. The Mister put them up a few weeks ago, but they weren't exactly how I wanted them, so he tried again, and we realized that maybe I should just be doing it because I was giving him directions about making them look "organic" and "asymmetrical", and he doesn't know what those words mean. So I did and
now it's like we have a permanent collection of balloons in our apartment!

Okay, off to lounge or make more cute shit. Okay, it's actually a "container garden", but calling it a pot garden is much funnier, especially when I reference it in casual conversation.

Anyhoo, once I'm done digesting my hummus (made this morning, I'm so channeling Martha Fucking Stewart today), gardening will commence. The poor mister had a fever yesterday and is feeling better, but not 100%, so the invalid may sit out on the porch with a blanket while I'm doing the work. And if planting finishes fairly quickly, I may be able to squeeze in some sewing also...

Fuckity Fuck Fuck Fuck

Can I say "Fuck the Supreme Court" on the internets??

This is a good link with more info about the ruling, and I have to say I am impressed with Ruth Bader-Ginsburg's dissent. Also, I haven't put any interesting photos from my camera up, so that's another reason right there.

Some nice things I was really happy about yesterday:
• My mom finished making a scarf for me and it's my favorite color combo ever (see previous post)!

• I have a job! Granted, it's for a summer camp and will only last for about 4 months total, but hey, it's fucking Michigan, so I should be happy I'm employed at least somewhat (I am).
• Nina the cat started eating canned food! She went to the vet on Thursday so I could talk to someone about making cat food for her, and it was discovered she's up to 16 POUNDS. What the hell? Am I a failure as a cat mom if my cat is insanely obese?
Anyhoo, she's getting hippie canned food instead, and was way not interested when I first put it in her bowl - I think it was more of a not-knowing-what-it-is thing as opposed to a not-liking-it thing, because frankly, she's fat because she loves food. I got her to finally eat it by dipping some kitty treats she does like into it and having her eat them. Augh, I really am a person who dips kitty treats in cat food to get her cat to eat it. Sigh
• We had chicken Parmesan for dinner last night. It was sooo good and we hadn't had it for awhile. We also had some Trader Joe's whole wheat spaghetti with it, which was tastier than the usual whole wheat pasta.
• The Mister brought home flowers that were really awesome, even though they were purple. Aaaand when I went to take a picture of them, I realized they were right in front of my fun purple poster.

That's all.

This is my new favorite color combination. sigh.

My parents paid for a sewing class for my birthday, which is very exciting because I've only made one thing from a pattern (it was a skirt, when I was in college, and my sister did most of the work), so I'm pretty stoked about the class. I'm making a dress, and I had to put pockets on the front before I did anything else. I appliquéd an ampersand [Ed: They're the up-and-coming hot shit these days, mark my words], though it's a wee bit high up and sort of large for the pocket...this is what happens when you wait until the last minute to get ready for the class, people. Anyhoo, I have the front and back (with zipper!) sewn, and have one more class to put in the sleeves and finish the rest.

The flowers were from the Mister, also for my brithday. My little sister's in town, so we decided to celebrate my birthday for a fourth time (this is why I love my birthday - if you milk it right, you can have people going out with you for a full month in celebration), and decided to do it at Circus, a lovely bar with a lethal combination of 55-cent cans of PBR and karaoke. Let's just say it started with a little Captain and Tenille and ended with a little Bonnie Tyler. And then for some reason [Ed: Reason actually being someone bought me some damn whiskey], we went to the EightBall, diviest bar ever, and then the Fleetwood, dineriesty diner ever, and waited two fucking hours to eat crappy greasy food - at this point I was so wasted I had no idea it had been a two hour wait until the Mister told me this morning. Oy.

Anyhoo, I'm somehow still alive. I have to stop this drinking nonsense. You'd think I was freaking 19 or some shit. Though, one good thing that happened last night is that I learned how to do the Sleepy Kitten dance. aaaaw. Also, when I hopped onto the internets this morning [Ed: this afternoon], I found at the blog of Hilarity Ann Arbor is Overrated the beginnings of a blog war with someone who yammers on about finding herself a man and goes to church. Ha. No, really, I went to Chicago and drank heavily for 48 hours straight, came back here and got sick, had my birthday and had my mom visit (not necessarily in that order), and now we're getting ready for another visit, this time from the Mister's mom and sister. It should be fun, lots more eating out, and we all know what a fantastic place Ann Arbor is to eat out in.
Anyhoooo, some sewing things that I finished last week:

We have a new couch, oh yeah! Here are the numerous stages, from horrific to actually-pretty-cute!, in two parts...

1. The couch with a cover and recovered pillows (covers made from extra curtain material and an old cloth shower curtain my mom didnt' want anymore.) Anyhoo, I decided that I'm catholic too this year, so I gave up dessert for Lent, but I'm also about to give up the Interwebs (well, sort of; I'm cutting my time down to 1.5 hours a day [Ed: Don't ask how long she's usually on]). So this is, like, the post proclaiming my intention, and if you put something on, like, the Interwebs, then it's like a real promise or something.

We're having pizza for dinner and just got back from the library and the Beer Despot, where we bought Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat beer, which isn't half bad. However, I am always reminded by my father that Leinie's is "what the hobos drank when I was in college". Though, frankly, he and his friends were drinking Point beer, which is even crappier (Think low-rent PBR). [Ed. - Speaking of PBR, we discovered a bar in town that has 55-cent PBR five nights a week and karaoke - awesome!]

One more thing: I obsessively read blogs, which is bad enough, but I am inexplicably drawn to crazy fucktard libertarian right-wingers who not only think that women's suffrage should be repealed, but that free speech in general is a bad idea. Why do I torture myself? I also really like the craft/sewing blogs, but I always end up feeling like a loser, as I am reading about someone being productive instead of actually being productive myself. Sigh.

Oh well, off to the Lenten mines.

AAAAHAHAHAHAHA

See you in hell, assholes!

Meh

It's cold and it's been snowing and I don't think I've left the house for a few days. The more the University lets pro-chief people bitch and moan, the more it makes them seem like they actually have a valid point. Which they don't. (I won't even get into my theory of how the campus has become more rabidly pro-chief, simply because the anti-chief groups are so annoying....)

I'm quite excited about this happening, actually, because so many of the pro-chiefers claim that since a Sioux tribe supports their idiotic and racist ideas, it's totally okay to do it. It's always depressing, usually dealing with the author being in love with someone who's either really into kicking puppies or has cancer or whatever. This week, the heartbreaking tale of woe was about a woman who met a man who was dealing with a rape charge (article here.) I was pretty creeped out afterwards, in that parts of it (and granted, she is definitely biased towards him being innocent as she's freaking dating him) just seemed icky and not cool on his part. And it made me want to know more about the case, but hell, I'm lazy and didn't know the time period or anything.
Thankfully, Gawker has the time and posted about it today (also here), so now I can see that yes, it is indeed insanely creepy to date some who has been charged with rape. Even if he's like, totally, a really nice guy with beestung lips!

back to suckville

The fucking holidays came and went (not too bad, though a bit boozy...), and we're back in the A-A, and well, that's about it. I made four, all about 54"x80", and they were pretty much a nightmare and took for-ever. But they're finished, so now I can go back to making fun (and small!) things. Right now I'm doctoring up a long-sleeved shirt that my sister gave me. the neck hole was too small, so I hacked at it and am re-sewing it into more of a boatneck. Next up on the project train? Christmas/holiday postcards, in which I can loudly proclaim my last (and first, for that matter) name to all of our friends and family. (This was inspired by the fact that Mister's friends [who are 30 - 30!!] sent us a card addressed to "Mr. and Mrs. Mister'slastname". What the fuck? (The pictures above look like a nightmare because it's so fucking hard to get the "layout" function to work. Sorry.) And I hate late fall, it's dark all the time, even during the day. Bah. At least the holidays are coming up, so I have a reasonable excuse to drink heavily.

I've been sewing a lot lately. This week I made new pillow covers, took apart and re-sewed some Ikea pillow covers, made a sewing machine cover (I like to cover things up, apparently), made a freaking bag (very exciting, though it's a little dumb looking), and made a little thread and scrap bag to put by the sewing machine (no pics right now of that one). It's all a run-up to me hemming these huge pieces of fabric to make cloth closet doors of sorts for our friends. It's sure to be a nightmare, as my "sewing in a straight line" abilites are somewhat questionable...

Here's a picture of our messy, messy apartment. I recovered the ugly black couch cushions,
they are now more pleasant greenish and blue colors. We have to actually "clean" this
weekend because my sister is coming into town. The mister is out of town for a few days at a conference, so it's just me and the cat. If I could, I would not leave the apartment until he came back (Wed. night), just to see if I would develop cabin fever. However, we're out of eggs and I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow.

2. The mister's family has a message board of sorts, and I got into a big debate with the various anti-choice people in his family (namely, his father, his sister and her husband). I am weirdly proud of myself for having stood up and loudly proclaimed my values. I've been reading a lot of feminist blogging (I Blame the Patriarchy, Feministing.com) and books (the complete history of women, which is this insanely long 3-book series. I just started the second one), and so I think I'm more aware of society's general insanity when it comes to women and feminism and all that shit. [side note: there's this online magazine/rag called "Sirens", which I found because the founder was also a big fan of "Sassy" magazine back in the day. Anyhoo, they have quite possibly the most typical, stupid, eye-rolling articles about the "post-feminist women", such as such gems like "Is Dieting Anti-Feminist?" or "Men Don't Suck", which is actually an article making it sound like poor men have been getting such a bad rap from us women, and we need to give them a break! And also, those damn feminists are so pro-women-should-be-in-charge, and men and women should be equal! Does she realize that the tenant of being feminist is equality for everyone? How is it someone who claims to be feminist buys into the bullshit that dumb people think being a feminist is? Gar.]

3. Tomorrow is Election Day! I have been going through stages of brief optimism followed by longer periods of guarded hope with some short spurts of dark bitterness while thinking about what's going to happen tomorrow. The seems to be easier, and I do remember how fucking disappointed I was in 2004, precisely because I had been so optimistic and certain that there was no way Bush could get re-elected. And also, Karl Rove has been going on about his secret polls, which could very well be bullshit, but the man is pretty smart. So we'll see.

That's about it.

At the corner of Living Room, Hallway and Kitchen

hee hee.

Cheese and motherfucking monkeys?!?!?

well then, I've heard about this thing called a "web log", and I'm thinking about maybe having one of my own.
